The Giver Homework

4. Explain why feeling and memories have been eliminated from Jonas’s community.

-They have been eliminated from his community because the Elders don’t want anyone to be sad or have memories of bad experiences or feelings that might scare people or make them sad and depressed. They want “sameness”. If the community had memories, everyone would have their own opinion and the Elders want a perfect world. They want everybody to be the same and the community to be a place where everything is controlled. If they need any information or an explanation of something they would ask The Giver or The Receiver of memories.

8. Discuss similarities between our society and the society in our novel.

- There are many similarities between our society and their community. For example we have an elderly home center where old people go at a certain age and Jonas’s community has the House of Old where old people also go at a certain age. Another example is we both have bicycles except that we also have other transportation and they just have bicycles. We both also have stuffed animals, in our society we can have them at any age but for Jonas’s community they get them at a certain age and then at another age they take them away from them and give it to someone else. We have a government they have the Elders. We both sleep but we don’t have a certain time we have to go to bed unless our parents tell us to. We do charity work and they have volunteer hours. We both have memories but in Jonas’s community, only the Giver and the Receiver have memories. Regular people don’t because the Elders don’t want anyone else remembering things. We both have very important rules that we have to follow. We both have families but for our society we can have as many kids as we want but in their community they can only have 2 kids. We both go to school, and we both have rivers. Both our society and their community have similarities and differences between each other.

1. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Sameness in Jonas’s community.

- There are many advantages of Sameness in their community, but there are also disadvantages. For example they get free food but at a certain time. They all get the same things so no one fights over other peoples things. The Elders control the weather and everything else so there are no dangerous storms. They all get bicycles at one point in time. They all get stuffed animals at the beginning of their life. There are no cars so there are not any fumes in the air, and there are not any bad people in their community. The disadvantages are there’s no color, everything is grey. They have to take stirrings. The Elders control everything in the community. You have to wait until you are 9 years old until you get your bicycle. You can’t choose your job, the Elders choose for you based on your volunteer work. They don’t have any memories except for the Giver and the Receiver of memories, and they have to release people for different reasons.
